ISTE Honorary Fellowship 2006

Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) has introduced Honorary Fellow-Grade Membership from 2000. Persons of eminence in the field of Engineering and Technology and have made significant contributions to the development of Technical Education and activities of ISTE at State/National level will be honoured with this award.

The Search Committee constituted by the Executive Council of ISTE have recommended the following five eminent persons for the conferment of Honorary Fellowship for the year 2006. The Fellowship will be presented during the inaugural function of the 36th National Annual Convention of ISTE to be held at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam, Erode Dist. (Tamil Nadu) during 14-16 December, 2006.

1. PROF. M.H. DHANANJAYA

Prof. M.H. Dhananjaya, Director (Technical), JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysore obtained his B.E. (Electrical Engg.), University of Mysore, M.S. in Electronics from Pratt Institute, USA. Recently he has been appointed as Consultant by the World Bank for Sub-Sector Study on Technical Education in Karnataka.

As a Director of Technical Education System of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, he has been responsible for planning, establishing and administering the following leading technical institutions: (i) Three Engineering Colleges (in Karnataka at Mysore and Bangalore and one at Noida) (ii) Four Polytechnics each having a different dimensions in training separately for women, disabled, co-op. scheme etc. (iii) Three Industrial Training Centres for basic level skill training programmes (iv) Three Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) at Mysore, Bangalore and Noida. (v) An International Training Institute for Exchange programme and joint certification of Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) programme in collaboration with U.K. University. (vi) A Consultancy service organisation providing expert services like Training, Engineering Design, Management Services and Expertise, M.I.S., etc.

He has worked as Expert in several National and Statel Level Committees constituted by Government of Karnataka, Government of India organisations like AICTE, MHRD, EdCIL, etc. As a One Man Committee, he has prepared the project report for setting up of a TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY at Karnataka, and a project report has also been prepared for Government of India, Ministry of Defence, for conversion of Institute of Armament Technology, Pune as a Deemed University.

Prof. Dhananjaya has membership of several professional bodies and Chairman and/or Member on the several Expert Committees. He has published several papers on formal education, non-formal education, technical education, management, institutional planning, education finance at National and International Conferences and Journals.

He has been the receipient of Anna University National Award for outstanding academician for the year 1986; UP Government National Award during 1991 by ISTE, New Delhi; National Science and Technology Award for Excellence for the year 1997-98 by Jeppiar Educational Trust, Chennai.

 

2. PROF. R.S. NIRJAR

Prof. R.S. Nirjar former Member Secretary of AICTE is an eminent engineer, educationist and administrator who has been closely associated with Technical Education in India for more than three decades. After obtaining a meritorious Degree in civil engineering from Jodhpur University, he took his post graduate degree in structural engineering from Roorkee University. Later he obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland under the Commonwealth Scholarship programme. On his return to India, he took up his teaching career as Associate Professor in Structural Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology (from 1970 to 1980) and later at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur where he served in Civil Engineering Department from 1980 to 1986. He worked as Professor & Head of Civil Engineering Department at Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow from 1986 to 1988.

During the period from 1987 to 1992 he had a stint as founder Principal of Bundelkhand Engineering College, Jhansi and then as Director, Institute of Engineering and Technology at Lucknow. Thereafter, he had served as Principal, Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College, Allahabad from 1992 to 1995 and as Principal, Malaviya Regional Engineering College, Jaipur from 1995 to 1999. During his tenure of seven years in Regional Engineering Colleges, he established academic collaboration between Regional Engineering Colleges in India and Institutes of United Kingdom. He has to his credit a number of research papers on structural engineering, building science, housing, educational policy and Management etc., which were published in leading technical journals. He also published several poems, short stories and articles in reputed hindi journals and magazines.

Prof. Nirjar was Member Secretary in AICTE from 1999 to 2003 and has been member of several professional bodies and committees. To cite a few, he was a member of UNESCO Task Force Committee for Technical Education; Member, National Research Projects’ Expert Committee, MHRD, New Delhi; Member Expert Advisory Committee, Department of Science and Technology; Member, National Co-ordination Board of Graduate – Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE); Member, Expert Committee for Thermal Power Projects, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India; Member, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur; Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow; Indian Institute of Management, Indore; Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai; National Institute of Forge & Foundary Technology, Ranchi, Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior and Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad. He has served as the President, Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi from 2001-2005.

 

3. PROF. D.P. AGRAWAL

Prof. D.P. Agrawal, Member, Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi was born on 2nd October, 1949. Completed his B.Sc. Engg. (Mechanical) from AMU, Aligarh , M.Tech. from IIT Delhi and Ph.D. from IIT Delhi.

He was founder Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management (IITM), Gwalior (1998-2003), Joint Educational Advisor, Ministry of HRD, GoI (1994-1998), National Project Director (1994-1999) Technical Education Projects I & II, National Project Director, Indo-UK REC's Project (1995-1998), Chairman, Central Regional Committee, AICTE; Managing Director, Educational Consultant India Ltd., (EdCIL), Ministry of HRD (Jan-Aug-97); Dean, IIT Delhi (1991-1994). During his tenure he has prepared and developed many national level Reports like as Member Secretary of the Working Group prepared the 9th Plan Document for Technical Education in the Country for the Planning Commission and as Chairman, National Group for Technology Management prepared the Policy Document for DST.

Prof. Agrawal has delivered many lectures at various seminars/workshops and conventions. He is a fellow of Institution of Engineers, India; Member, Power Engineers Society, India; Life Member, ISTE, New Delhi; Life Member, FMFP and India Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Prof. Agrawal has been honoured for Life time contribution to Mechanical Engineering by IE(I) (2001); Conferred commendation for Excellence in Administration from IIT, Delhi in 1992 and many more prestigious awards. He has reviewed number of national and international journals in the area of mechanical engineering, power and turbomachines. He was examiner for Ph.D. and M.S. Theses of IITs, IISc. and central universities. Organised a number of seminars, workshops and continuing education programmes. Chaired number of sessions in National and International Conferences.

 

4. PROF. L.M. PATNAIK

 

Prof. L.M. Patnaik obtained his Ph.D. in 1978 in the area of Real-Time Systems, D.Sc. in 1989 in the area of Computer Systems and Architectures, both from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Presently, he is a Professor in the Dept. of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. During the last 35 years of his service, his teaching, research and development interests have been in the areas of Parallel and Distributed Computing, Computer Architecture, CAD of VLSI Systems, Theoretical Computer Science, Real-Time Systems, Soft Computing and Computational Neuroscience. In these areas, he has published over 440 papers in refereed International Journals and refereed International Conference Proceedings. He is a co-editor/co-author of ten books in the areas of VLSI System Design and Parallel Computing. He has supervised 20 Doctoral Theses and over 160 Masters Theses in the above areas. He served as the President of Advanced Computing and Communication Society and the Computational Intelligence Society of India. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Region 10 and Distinguished Visitor of IEEE Computer Society for the Asia-Pacific Region.

As a recognition of his contributions in the areas of Electronics, Informatics, Telematics and Automation, he was awarded the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award in 1989; the Honorable Mention Award, Fourth CSI/IEEE International Symposium on VLSI Design 1992; the Dr. Ramlal Wadhwa Award for the year 1992 by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers for his contributions during the last ten years in the field of Electronics and Telecommunication; the Platinum Jubilee Lecture Award (Computer Science), Indian Science Congress in 1994; the Samanta Chandrasekhar Award in 1994 by the Orissa Science Academy and many more prestigious Awards in his credit. He is Fellow of the IEEE, The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), The Computer Society of India and Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is a Life Member of VLSI Society of India and Instrument Society of India. His name appears in Asia's Who's Who of Men and Women of Achievement; Directory of distinguished Computer Professionals of India.

Prof. Patnaik has delivered several invited lectures in USA, Canada, France, UK, Yugoslavia (erstwhile), Hungary, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.

 

5. DR. I. GOPAL REDDY

Dr. Iska Gopal Reddy obtained his B.E. (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering from Government College of Engineering, Anantapur in 1957 and Ph.D. in 1972 from University of Liverpool, U.K.

He has been conferred with Honorary Doctorate by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in recognition of his outstanding achievements and academic excellence. He is Fellow Member of Professional Bodies like : Institution of Engineers (India), Calcutta, A.P. Akademi of Sciences, Hyderabad, ISTE, New Delhi, Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi and Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York.

Dr. Reddy has 46 years of teaching/research and administrative experience. He was former Vice-Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad for 3 years, Principal/Director, NBKR Institute of Science and Technology, Nellore Dist. for 21 years, Professor at REC, Warangal for 6 years, Commonwealth Scholar, University of Liverpool, U.K. for 3 years.

He has published several Research Papers on different aspects of Electrical Engineering in reputed National and International Journals.

He is Member and Chairman of Board of Studies and Selection Committees of various Universities, Member of Governing Body/Management Committee for over 15 Institutions, Chairman, ISTE Andhra Pradesh Chapter, Member, A.P. State Council of Higher Education, Chairman, IEEE, Hyderabad Section, Member National Coordinating Board of GATE, Member of National Executive Council of ISTE, Member of various Committees constituted by the All India Council for Technical Education and the University Grants Commission.

Dr. Reddy visited United Kingdom, Singapore, Netherlands, Hongkong, Peurto Rico, Germany, Japan and U.S.A.
