Prof. N.R. Shetty had a brilliant academic career and obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics with Electronics as a special subject from Madras University, M.Sc. (Opto-Electronics) from University of Essex (U.K.) and Ph.D. from Dept. of Electrical Engineering of IIT Bombay. He had held the position of Professor and Principal of Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal, Vice-Chancellor (two terms) of Bangalore University, Member Secretary and Chief Executive, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi.
Prof. Shetty has over thirty five years of teaching experience at Post Graduate Level and Research Experience in the areas of Microwave Engineering, Quantum and Opto Electronics, Solid State Physical Electronics, etc. He has published over thirty papers in International/National Journals and edited ten proceedings which include proceedings of ISTE Winter/Summer Schools for teachers in the areas of Microwave and Communication Engineering and Entrepreneurship Development.
He was a Visiting Professor and Fulbright Scholar at University of Texas, Austin, USA and a UNESCO Fellow at Essex University, Colchester and Standard Telecommunication Labs. Harlow (U.K.) and was the receipt of Visitorship of the British Council to visit British Universities. He is a recipient of Shiromani Vikas Award (1993), Bharat Vikas Award (1996), Bhargava Award (1997) and Bharat Ratna Sir M.V. National Parisara Ratna Award (1999).
He has visited Beijing, Shandong, Shanghai and Shenzhen in China as a member of the Indian goodwill delegation sponsored by Ministry of Culture of Peoples Republic of China. He went on a study tour to Germany, UK and USA under UNDP Project. He has also visited Egyptian Universities as a Member of the high power delegation of UGC to establish collaboration between Indian and Egyptian Universities and also Headed the delegation sponsored by UGC to Kyrghystan (former Soviet Russia) to establish linkage with Kyrghy State National University.
Prof. Shetty was elected in 1997-1998 as National President, ISTE, New Delhi. He is a member, Board of Governors, National Institute of Technology, Warangal and member of various Committees/Councils of State Governments, Central Government, Universities, UGC, AIU, AICTE and MHRD. He was also a member of Executive Council of AICTE and Chairman, South West Regional Committee, AICTE, Bangalore.
Presently, he is Chairman, National Advisory Committee on Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Dept. of Science & Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, Chairman, ISTE Working Professionals Learning Project, Bangalore, Chairman, Sir M. Visveswaraiah Memorial Foundation, Bangalore and Executive Committee Member, VTU, Belgaum. Prof. Shetty is President, ISTE for the term 2006-2008. He has been elected as Vice-President of International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES), Washington DC, USA for a period of two years. Dr. Shetty has re-elected as President, ISTE for the term of 2009-2011.
